"How much will it cost?" is usually the first question any shipper asks. Working out the real shipping cost from Pakistan is also the hardest question to answer with a single number. Sea and air freight pricing depends on several variables working together, not one flat rate.

What drives sea freight pricing

Sea freight is quoted primarily on volume (cubic metres) and weight, using whichever produces the higher "chargeable" figure. On top of the base ocean freight rate, expect line-item charges for terminal handling and documentation. If you're going door-to-door, add inland trucking at both ends. Consolidated (LCL) shipments cost more per unit than a full container (FCL). Once your cargo approaches container volume, FCL usually becomes the better value.

What drives air freight pricing

Air freight uses chargeable weight too, but volumetric weight matters more here. Bulky, lightweight cargo can cost as much to fly as something much heavier and denser. Airlines and forwarders also apply fuel and security surcharges that move with market conditions. That's why an air freight quote is only accurate for a short window of time.

Costs shippers often forget to budget for

  • Insurance, which is optional but worth it for high-value cargo.
  • Customs duties and taxes — separate from the freight cost, calculated on the declared value of goods.
  • Port or airport storage charges if cargo isn't cleared and collected promptly.
  • Inland trucking from the port or airport to your final destination, if you're not arranging that yourself.

Why "rough estimates" are often misleading

A quote based only on "a pallet of goods to Karachi" or "a container to Dubai" will always be a rough guess. So much depends on exact weight, dimensions, packaging, and route and carrier availability at the time of booking. The only way to get a number you can plan around is to share the real details.
